I want you back

Dear God,

Why do you hate me so much? I am a wonderful person who does nice things. We are so in a fight right now.

Canes Acquire Cullen From Rangers

I can't stop crying.

He's my American dream. See?

And now he is gone.

Now this is the way I like to start my day:

you and me always and forever

This song is going out to Henrik Lundqvist.

Henrik, my love, the greatest goalie ever, I am sorry they are playing games with your money. I am sorry you weren't treated as a priority, and instead we had to sign two people we probably didn't even need (including the beyond hideous Scott Gomez -- BREATHE THROUGH YOUR NOSE YOU UGLY BASTARD!) instead of just paying you $900 million a year. YOU ARE WORTH IT, HENRIK.

For serious, I know that his being on the team is practically guaranteed, even in this case, but I just have to go on record to say that if Henrik isn't on the team, my season tickets are canceled.

Anyway, this band is Swedish, like lovely Henrik. And this song is a delight.

Hottie hockey prospects

So every year (or every week sometimes) I inflict television horror upon J. Thank heaven we both enjoy this sport or the hours of Rangers game time would be as tortuous as my many hours of tennis viewing (cue Wimbledon). But keeping up tradition I do find hockey related programming that tests J's patience - such as the NHL awards and NHL draft ceremony. Admittedly the awards are a travesty of TV, mostly because they're produced, filmed and performed by Canadian television which resembles US public access in it's best moments. Versus had the good grace to air the awards ridiculously late so we could fast forward through them the next day for shots of a gloriously (read: too) tan Henrik (see photo). Alas he lost the Vezina to that bitchass Brodeur. Whatever.

Usually we follow up that snoozefest a few days later with the NHL draft, nearly as boring but chock full of barely legal hockey hotties. Our ritual is to pick out the most attractive draftee and root for the Rangers to nab him. It's usually a 3 hour borathon with little to no payoff. Not this year. Per tradition we selected our pick from the crowd. Very easy- it was clearly top European prospect Alexei Cherepanov, cocky, amused and sporting a modern version of Jagr's 1992 'do. Turns out he's a scoring dynamo projected to be picked at least 5th in the draft. Aw well, maybe there's another one in the crowd. Turns out he's not picked 5th, 6th or 16th. He's picked 17th by the Glen Sather and the New York Rangers!!! There was tension, there was clapping, it was beautiful! The most fun draft we've had so far.

Check Cherepanov hanging out with Russian mermaids at Coney Island.

I love this kid! Here's to the 08-09 season!

Anaheim hoists the Cup!

A little late I know, but before I can post about the draft this past weekend I have to congratulate the Anaheim Ducks and more particularly Teemu Selanne for their decisive performance throughout the playoffs and finals. Since I really started following hockey in 2002 Teemu's been my favorite player to not wear the shield, so when we were finally down and out I had to root for his team (plus they have an O'Donnell, Sean on D). Also I think the ducks sported the best playoff beards of any team. Maybe that the key. We should start our beards in February!

that's a pretty nice haircut

OK, I love hockey as much as the next girl — who am I kidding, way more than the next girl — but if you told me I'd jump up and cheer during the NHL draft, I'd call you a maniac. But I did just jump up and cheer.

We got Alexei Cherepanov that Russian dude with the crazy hair. He was a projected top five, but no one would pick him. By the time they got to our pick and Cherepanov was still available, I already had him under Jagr's wing. Plus, I was in love. And then we got him. Yippee!

east v west

Ok, so I haven't posted since we bowed out of the race, but I have been watching the playoff fairly religiously and seen some things. First of all, what the fuck did the Sabres think they were doing raising their sticks to salute fans after losing Game 6 to the Senators? I was incredulous and had to watch a few times. No they didn't formally take the middle of the ice, but they stole our salute just the same. Guess they were really impressed with the emotion displayed by j, myself and 19000 others at our Game 6. Whatever, they can blow me.
In good news, Anaheim took the west. Not that I hate Detroit, but honestly I was worried that Shanahan would regret leaving the Wings more if they took the cup this year. Plus I love Teemu Selanne! He's headed to his first Cup finals starting Monday. I've gotta root for the Ducks, despite their ridiculous name.

Go Ducks!

much heart but no win

Our season is over, and my heart is bruised a little. I really wanted glory for this team (and a little for myself too). I love these men even though they're mostly just numbers and names on the back of a jersey. J and I have spent the majority of our time in the last seven months with this team, their coaches, the MSG crew and bottom line is we're gonna miss them.

I never thought I'd love being part of crowd as much as I have this season and especially these playoffs. I may have had to put up with visible asscrack from Sweatpants, ceaseless chatter from Barney, gay slurs from assholes, but ultimately we all wanted the same thing - our team's best effort. That communal inertia that propels you to your feet, voices and towels raised, is nearly magical and I cannot wait to do it again come September.

four months to go

Thanks for a great season, boys.

Coming soon: j & d's year end awards -- we promise they are way more entertaining than the NHL awards.

let us pray ...

OK, so only it's only Matt Cullen who looks like he's praying (he does this during the anthem every game, bowing his head with an occasional turn to spit, what a dream), but I was never going to let this photo get by me.

Anyway, it's not that we only have a prayer — we've got a lot more than that. And yes, we watched "Miracle" last night (long overdue), but it isn't because we need a miracle. We just needed the inspiration. And my boys need to "play their game" as they are so fond of saying. And we need to rock the Garden. And we all need to win.

I plan to do everything right: wear the right clothes, take the same route, buy the right beverages (yes, these superstitions are ludicrous, but effective). Hopefully my good luck lady will be at the Double Team store (though we won without her Tuesday night) and everything we can do and everything the team does turns into a win.
